American actor Adam West has died at the age of 88.
West who was a legend to many, played comic book hero “Batman” in the 1960s TV series, died peacefully following a short battle with leukaemia.
Despite huge success with Batman, he failed to land any other roles of note but he was loved by fans of the TV show.
West was given the role as Bruce Wayne and his alter ego Batman when Produce William Dozier spotted him in a Nestle Quik advert. The hit TV series ran from 1966 to 1968 and included a feature length movie.
In 1970 he was offered the role as James Bond but declined, saying that Bond should be played by a British actor.
In the 2000s, he found new fame when he supplied the voice for Mayor Adam West, the lunatic Mayor of Quahog, Rhode Island. He was a successful voice over actor due to his distinctive voice.
Burt Ward, who played his sidekick Robin in the Batman series was devastated at the loss of his long-term friend.
Adam and I had a special friendship for more than 50 years. We shared some of the most fun times of our lives together.
“There are several fine actors who have portrayed Batman in films. In my eyes, there was only one real Batman that is and always will be Adam West. He was truly the Bright Night.”
