A doctor in Detroit is facing life imprisonment following charges of female genital mutilation (FGM) being brought against her.
Jumana Nagarwala is to be prosecuted for carrying out the obscene operation on young girls who were between six and twelve years old.
It is believed to be the first case of this nature in the US since FGM was made illegal in 1996.
She was investigated after the authorities received a tip-off but Doctor Nagarwala has denied any wrongdoing or involvement in the procedure.
Prosecutors however state “she had performed horrifying acts of brutality on the most vulnerable of victims”.
Dr. Nagarwala was remanded in custody at a federal court in Detroit.
It is believed that over 200 million girls suffer from horrendous practice, which is often carried out in countries such as Ethiopia and Indonesia, often without proper medical facilities.
The female circumcision is the removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. Depending on the country, FGM can occur any time from shortly after birth to the onset of puberty. The clitoral hood and glands are removed during the process, along with inner and outer labia. In some instances the vulva is closed, leaving a small hole for urine and menstrual fluids to pass through.
Later in life, the hole may be re-opened for intercourse and childbirth.
Amazingly the barbaric procedure is often carried out by women.
