The Philippine Institute of Volcanology raised the alert level to level 4 after the Mayon Volcano spewed out a 10-kilometer high cloud of ash at just after 12pm today (January 22.)
The alert was issued at 1pm raising the alert from level 3 which states there is an increased tendency of a hazardous eruption to a level 4 which states there is a hazardous eruption imminent.
Paul Alanis from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology stated that an eruption “may happen in hours.”
An 8 kilometre perimeter has been established around the volcano with evacuation of residents happening immediately after the alert level was raised, government troops are assisting with evacuating civilians.
The volcano has been becoming increasing active since January 14.
