A large quantity of exotic tortoises have been seized from Madagascar, believed to have a value of $276,721 or almost one million baht.
Malaysian authorities discovered 325 Indian Star tortoises and five Ploughshare tortoises packed into boxes and labelled as stones on an Etihad Airways flight from Antananarivo Airport in Madagascar.
Officials at Kuala Lumpur were tipped off about the illegal cargo, making the discovery on Thursday.
It is unclear what will happen to the tortoises, which are often kept as pets.
The Indian Star is a threatened species of tortoise found in dry areas and scrub forest in India and Sri Lanka. This species is quite popular in the exotic pet trade, which is why it is on the endangered list.
The Ploughshare tortoise is only found in Madagascar and is considered to be one of the rarest tortoises on the planet.
