A United States destroyer has collided with a Filipino merchant ship, in the seas south west of Japan, resulting seven crew members from the navy vessel being reported missing.
The USS Fitzgerald and the merchant ship collided at around 02:30, resulting in serious damage to the destroyer both above and below the waterline.
Although the ship was still sailing under its own power, two tugs were dispatched from Japan to assist in taking it to shore.
News agencies reported that that neither of the two vessels were in danger of sinking but there were concerns about missing personnel.
With ships being fitted with an array of technology such as radar, one wonders how such a collision is possible?
