Chinese tour guide killed at Elephant camp in Pattaya

A Chinese tour guide was killed at a Pattaya elephant camp yesterday after a tourist behaviour apparently enraged the elephant into attacking.

At the time of the incident 17-year-old male elephant named “Uthen” was giving a ride to two tourists in the vicinity of a Chinese tour group.

As the elephant passed one of the group reportedly thought it would be funny to yank on the elephant tail which resulted in the elephant charging.

The leader of the tour group Mr He Yongjie was trying to get the members of the group out of harm’s way of the angry elephant when he was charged into and trampled, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the tourists riding the elephant was also thrown from its back and sustained injury whilst the other rider was able to cling on before the mahout, U Rungram was able to calm Uthen.

Two others were injured in the incident and taken to hospital.

A man only identified as Sakda who is in charge of safety at the Sam Liam Thong Kham Camp told investigating officers that staff attempted to get guests to safety but there was a large number in the group and they all ran in fright in different direction.

The elephant’s mahout blamed its behaviour on the tourist for pulling its tail.

An investigation is still ongoing.
