Local officials in Pattaya spoke with Sophon Cable TV to announce that they had chosen Dongtan Beach as the site for a new campaign to stop smoking on Thailand’s beaches.
Wutthuphon Charoenphon said that local authorities in connection with the department of marine coastal resources will begin to run a campaign called “Dongtan No Smoking” following the ban on smoking on 20 Thai beaches that came into effect last week.
They said that no smoking shelters would be set up in the area.
The campaign will target both beach vendor as well as tourists to inform them about the smoking ban.
Violators after the amnesty ends in February could face fines of up to 100,000 baht and or 1 year in prison.
There was no report in the announcement as to fines or jail time for the imposed ban on Dongtan beach, but Sophon said they will continue to monitor action taken at the beach over the next few weeks.
