It was reported by the media that the first “free” beach umbrellas and chairs were distributed to vendors in North Pattaya over the weekend.

The upscale new items sporting the Chang logo have caused a bit of a stir online after many claim they are not really “free.”

While the umbrellas and the chairs themselves might be free of charge operators are being asked to fork out 9,800 baht for green cushions that go with the chairs.

40 operators who had pre-registered received the new “earth coloured” umbrellas and chairs at a ceremony on Saturday.

However the news that they had to buy the cushions appeared to come as a bit of a surprise.

The new smart looking equipment is an effort to make Pattaya Beach look pristine for the upcoming International Fleet Show which will run from November 13 to 22.

The handing out of equipment to be used comes after local authorities have imposed stricter regulations on beach vendors which include limiting the size of their plots and location as well as banning alcohol sales and smoking on the beaches.

Rangtip Eve who posted online regarding the free beach equipment commented “well, they are not really free are they.”

Others questioned why all of the equipment was sporting a Chang logo.
