Officials in attendance at a City Hall meeting here in Pattaya were presented with a rather unusual gift from some beach workers, 110,000 cigarette butts that had been collected from the sands since the start of February.
The large amount of butts were collected by a group of female masseuses working on Jomtien Beach apparently since the ban came into force on February 1.
Pattaya’s Deputy Mayor Wichian Pongpanich praised the women for their efforts and also called them instrumental in informing the public of the new ban.
The women have apparently been warning customers that they could face a 2,000 baht fine if their caught lighting up on the sand outside of designated areas, however as the law is being enforced by the Environmental Department the maximum penalty can be as much as 100,000 baht and or a year in prison.
The women presented those in attendance at the meeting with the cigarette butts neatly packed into large water bottles.
There has been no official report as yet of anyone being fined for smoking on the beach.
