In part of a city-wide effort to improve safety over 1,000 motorcycle taxi drivers were made to attend driving lessons and all those in attendance were also tested for drug use.
The day aimed at improving safety on the roads for both locals and tourists took place on February 23 where Pattaya’s Security Chief Teerasak Jatuporn and municipal police chief Pol Maj Jirawat Sukontasap oversaw the driving lessons and drugs test for the 1,000-strong group of taxi-bike drivers which took place at Pattaya School Number 8.
A lecture was given by staff from the Chonburi Land Transport Department who covered traffic laws which are often either overlooked or ignored, especially by those in the public-transport sector.
Some of the issues that were highlighted included driving through red lights, improper or illegal U-turns and driving against the flow of traffic.
Police also made those in attendance take a urine test to check for drug use, those that tested positive had their licenses suspended and were ordered to attend drug-rehabilitation courses.
Speaking about the course Teerasak said that it was an effort to improve safety, compliance with traffic laws and the image of Pattaya’s public-transport network.
Bike drivers were also instructed to not overcharge and to also act as “eyes and ears” for police across the city.
