A police officer here in Pattaya is getting a lot of attention and praise after deciding to hand out a different form of punishment after catching two schoolgirls on their way to school who were not wearing crash helmets whilst riding a motorcycle.
Instead of the usual fine which would have been 400 baht each the officer opted to have the two girls pick up rubbish from around the area where they were caught which happened to be outside of the police station on Beach Road.
Local news said that many people stopped to take pictures and applauded the officer for coming up with a creative punishment which helped both the girls and the city.
The two girls told the officer that they were late for school and forgot to pick up their helmets.
Police all across the kingdom are cracking down on motorcyclists who fail to wear helmets after a graphic safety video showing many fatalities of people who were not wearing protective crash helmets was released last week in an effort to reduce the number of fatalities on Thai roads.
Once the girls had picked up sufficient rubbish from around the area they offered a wai and the officer saluted them before sending them on their way.
