On 8th June the Deputy Mayor of Pattaya, Mr.Ronnakit Aekasing, Deputy Chief of Pattaya, Mr.Pakorn Sukonchart together with representatives from the Department of Rural Roads met with Napha Construction Co., Ltd. And Nong Prue Police Officers to discuss traffic congestion on and around Sukhumvit Road caused by the construction of the Pattaya Underpass tunnel.
An engineer from Napha Construction explained to the officials that they will install a 1.2 metre High-Density Polyethylene drainage pipe, which will drain water away from the tunnel to Nong Yai district. The pipe work will be laid from central Pattaya and travel along Siam Country Club Road. Because of this a request was made to close parts of Sukhumvit Road for 30 days.
A plan B was also discussed where 4 lanes of the main road would be closed for a short stretch near to Father Ray Foundation, leaving 2 lanes open for traffic.
The Deputy Chief addressed the meeting and stated that the project is crucial for Pattaya and traffic congestion was unavoidable until construction is completed.
It is advised to add extra time when making journeys in and around Pattaya during the underpass construction phase. It is also advised to drive and ride more carefully on Sukhumvit Road. Last month a motorcyclist skidded on sand on the main road and was killed when he fell into the path of a coach.
Since this accident, the main road is being swept daily, but still be very, very careful.
