There has been a lot of talk in the media in recent weeks about the beach smoking ban which came into effect on 24 beaches across Thailand, well now it seems that the ban will not be enforced as yet on Pattaya and Jomtien beaches as originally thought.
A large scale meeting of state employees was held at the Ambassador City Hotel in Jomtien where 878 delegates from 11 provinces attended the meeting to listen to the environmental reasons behind the ban.
Jatupon Burutpat from the department of marine and coastal resources was in attendance and stated that he was happy with the recent PR campaigns, signs and cooperation local authorities have provided.
After the meeting a delegation was taken to Dong Tan beach to oversee measures put in place ahead of the ban, at present Dong Tan is the only beach in Pattaya where smoking has been prohibited.
The delegation was led by the director of the department of marine and coastal resources Chonburi branch, Thanet Mannoi who said that the beach smoking ban would soon encompass other beaches in Pattaya but declined to give an exact date for when this would happen.
There was no mention in the report of the question that most people have asked online as to what the penalties for lighting up on the sand will be after many speculated fines of up to 100,000 baht and or jail time.
