The landscape of Walking Street will be drastically different from next month after all bars, clubs, entertainment venues and shops have been ordered to remove their advertising signs.
The order by deputy mayor Apichart Weerapan, was issued to all businesses in the world famous Walking Street in Pattaya.
Understandably business owners operating in the popular tourist nightspot are irate over the decision worried about the negative effects it will have on their businesses.
The reason for the new order is apparently that some of the signs are illegal and are dangerous because they are “obstacles.”
It was reported in the media two years ago that Pattaya authorities were concerned about the signs preventing fire engines from traveling down the street in the event of a fire.
Business owner have suggested moving the signs up higher as a compromise but so far no arrangement has been agreed and the signs are to be removed by the end of the month.
The order comes at a time of an increasing effort to clean up the image of Pattaya and has left many wondering if it really is a matter of access for emergency vehicles.
What do you think? Will you be sad to see the bright lights of Walking Street torn down?
