On Tuesday the Cabinet approved funding of Bt1.705-billion for identity smartcards for welfare rights for 14 million low-income members of the public and 4.5 million civil servants.
The majority of the budget will go to creating the smartcards for the 14.12 million low-income people throughout the kingdom that have registered for state welfare.
The cards will have two microchips in them; one will be used to pay fares on public transport and similar services and the other to make payments with Electronic Data capture equipment.
The cards will also deal with funds allocated to those who receive old-age allowances and disability allowances.
Of the allocated funds 124 million baht will go to creating smartcard to the civil service workers, to be brought into use at the beginning of October designed to try and curb abuses of the medical welfare system.
