The top commander of the immigration police announced on Wednesday (August 16) that the highly anticipated 10-year retirement visa is now available.
Lt. Gen. Natthathorn Prohsunthorn announced that the new visa which comes in two parts, each for 5 years and is available to foreigners from 14 countries at present, however they have to meet several conditions to qualify one of which is to have three million baht in the bank.
He said that the new visa has been available since Friday however so far no applications have made it as far as his desk.
He feels that media focus on the new visa would be more beneficial than recent news stories of long queues at immigration checkpoints.
Some staff seemed unaware that the new visa had been made available to which Natthathorn responded that not all staff may have read the memo and applicants should continue with their applications.
The new visa is part of Thailand’s continued plan to attract retirees as previously a retirement visa had to be renewed annually.
The 14 Countries are: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, The United Kingdom and the United States.
Other conditions that need to be met in order to be granted the new visa are that applicants must not have a criminal record or pending convictions, be from 14 designated countries and have a minimum of 3 million baht in the bank.
