Plans are being put in place to invest 15 billion baht into expanding Chiang Mai International Airport as a result of increased numbers of passengers using the airport over the past few years.
An announcement was made on February 28 by Squadron Leader Monthanik Rakngam, Manager of Chiang Mai International Airport who said the investment will result in increased capacity for the number of travelers using the airport.
Currently the airport has a capacity for eight million travellers per year but figures show an increasing number of people using the airport each year, in 2017 a total of 10.2 million people used the airport meaning that it was operating above capacity.
15 billion baht will now be invested to construct a new 4 story passenger terminal and a multistory car park with space for 5,000 cars.
It is predicted that the proposed alterations will increase the airports capacity to 20 million passengers per year.
Other minor improvements such as new signs, upgraded facilities and hiring of additional staff will commence beginning in April.
