After the recent tragic accident where several Japanese tourists and one Thai guide where killed in a minivan accident the government promised to tighten up checks and restrictions on minivans and their drivers across the kingdom.
It seems however that enforcing drivers to not drive tired which was one of the authority’s main goals wasn’t being enforced yesterday after several family members were hospitalised after their minivan ploughed into trees in the central reservation of the Petchkasem Highway.
The driver, reportedly only 18 years of age apparently fell asleep at the wheel when driving a family of seven from Surat Thani to Sakon Nakhorn to attend a family event.
Two men and four women as well as a 5-year-old child were all taken to the Thap Sakae Hospital following the accident.
A passenger on the bus Wilaiwan Jantha said that everyone on the bus was asleep then the next thing they knew the bus had collided with the tree.
She said that she believed that the young driver must have fallen asleep behind the wheel like everyone else on the bus.
