It has been reported that a 60-year- old British tourist has died after drowning at Karon Beach in Phuket yesterday, after going swimming in a red-flagged area.

The deceased has been named as Collin William Dean who went to the beach with his wife before going for a swim where he was dragged under by large waves.

His wife realising her husband was in distress called for help from people on the beach who went into the water after Mr Dean and dragged him from the water unconscious. Medical personnel arrived and with the aid of beachgoers attempted to resuscitate the unconscious man.

Witnesses to the incident said several tourists gave emergency medical attention to the man prior to the medical personnel’s arrival. Unfortunately Mr Dean did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials in Phuket are still in the process of sourcing new lifeguards after recent contract issues have left many beaches being currently manned by teams of volunteer lifeguards.

At the time of the incident it was reported that there was no lifeguards in the vicinity however there was red-flags which mean no swimming flying in the area.
