Nine Cambodians were arrested for allegedly cutting down and processing Siamese rosewood inside a nature reserve in Sa Kaew’s Mueang district on Monday.
The arrests were made after park officials and troops found roughly 40 Cambodians walking in single file, each carrying a plank of the rosewood on the backs.
The men fled into the forest however nine were caught and detained.
Pang Si Da National Park Chief Panatchakorn Phobanthit said they were alerted to what the men were doing after a tip-off.
The apprehended men had crossed the border at night and travelled by foot for four days to reach the reserve. It would then take the men five days to cut and prepare the wood before smuggling it back across the border by foot.
Officers caught the thieves on their way back and confiscated 75 planks of rosewood and two chainsaws.
