U-Tapao Airport near Pattaya to become 3 rd airport serving Bangkok
An agreement has been signed between The Thai Royal Navy and the Ministry of Transport which will allow U-Tapao Airport be developed as the 3 rd commercial airport serving the Big Mango.
Navy Commander-in- Chief Kraisorn Chansuvanich and the Thai Minister of Transport Prajin Juntong signed the collaboration agreement on Thursday 4 th June in preparation for the first phase of increased air traffic at the airport. U-Tapao Airport is set to achieve full commercial service status by 2017.
The first phase of the agreement will see many improvements to the airport including a renovation of the passenger terminal and the construction of a brand new terminal. Other facilities and services will be improved and expanded in order to cater for the expected 3 million passengers per year. Highway 331 will be widened to four lanes and a new motorway link will be constructed to Pattaya via Highway 7. This will help cater for the increase in road traffic between Don Mueang, Suvarnibhumi and U-Tapao Airports.
The second phase of the airport expansion will see passenger capacity expanded from 3 million a year to 5 million. This is planned for 2018 – 2020.
This is great news for Pattaya and the local areas as it will bring an increase in tourist numbers and also make the Eastern Seaboard much more attractive for international business.
