After complaints from outraged locals an American man and his Thai wife have been ordered to take down 33 Buddha heads that they put up as decorations on a wall surrounding their home in Chiang Mai.
The wife identified as Nuanchan Sonchantuek, 34, took down the Buddha heads after a request to do so was issued by local police and the headman of Pae Khwang village.
Nuanchan said she and her husband were practicing Buddhists and never intended to offend anybody.
95 percent of the Thai population are Buddhist and treating images of Buddha as decorations is considered disrespectful, images are meant to be worshiped.
Nuanchan said that she and her husband who was not named built the house in the village nearly a year ago and had brought a total of 70 Buddha head statues from a shop in Hangdon in Chiang Mai but now they will display the head discreetly inside of the property so as not to offend anyone.
There is an organisation called “knowing Buddha” that attempts to educate foreign tourists to prevent this type of situation occurring.
They have a large billboard on display near Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok which has a very clear message on how to treat images of Buddha.
