Barbara Fistrovic, 65, from Australia, was on a family holiday in Phuket when she was pulled unconscious from dangerous waters at Kamala Beach yesterday afternoon.
She failed to regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at Patong Hospital.
Police were called by lifeguards to the beach at 3pm yesterday after lifeguards rescued Barbara and her husband Ivan from the strong surf.
Lifeguards performed emergency first aid on Ivan, 75, once he was brought to shore and he recovered but despite lifeguards best efforts Barbara did not regain consciousness.
Kamala Police officer Lt. Col Somnuek Damkhaew said that they were alerted that an Australian couple had gone swimming in a red flag area, where strong currents dragged them away from the shore.
He said officers are still investigating the incident.
