Those prone to running the occasional red light in the nation’s capital better watch out because plans are being put in place to upgrade traffic cameras at all intersections across the city which will be able to catch motorists who run red lights 24 hours a day.

The capitals new “smart system” will replace the aging technology currently in use.

The current cameras in use are now out of contract and the metropolitan police force has set new terms to the private sector for a replacement which stipulates the new cameras must be able to catch people running lights 24 hours a day and they must be linked to the Department of Land Transport.

They said by linking to the DLT police hope to catch more offenders and issue more fines along with points on the offender’s license and therefor discourage them from repeat offending.

Pol Col Kitti Ariyanon, Deputy traffic commissioner said by issuing the new terms to the private sector it would ensure that all cameras at intersections across the city are up to date with a “smart system” which will help with enforcing traffic laws and distribution of fines for violators.

According to reports the new system will incorporate the new style fines that are payable at banks and other establishments as well as police stations in an effort to make paying fines easier.
