Police announced yesterday that they had fined an American couple for public indecency after they took pictures with their bare butts showing at a sacred Buddhist temple before uploading the pictures to social media.

Police identified the two men as Joseph Dasilva, 38, and his partner Travis Dasilva, 36, after the pair were taken into custody at Don Muang Airport in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Both Joseph and Travis were fined 5,000 baht (£114) each for exposing their buttocks at the Wat Arun temple (Temple of the Dawn) in Bangkok.

Jaruphat Thongkomol, the district police chief handling the investigation told reporters that both men have admitted to taking the picture, a picture which caused mass outrage among Thai internet citizens after it was posted last week.

Jaruphat said that the couple would also face a further fine for a similar picture taken at another of Bangkok’s temples.

They pair are still being held at the immigration detention centre in Bangkok while officers consider pursuing further charges of violation of the Computer Crimes Act because the photo was uploaded online.

Many comments online called for harsh penalties to be issued against the couple for their lack of respect for Thai culture with some suggesting permanent blacklisting from the Kingdom.
