The guitarist and vocalist from the J. Geils Band has died at his home in Groton, Massachusetts according to police reports. The guitarist was found unresponsive at his home and pronounced dead at the scene.
Born John Warren Geils Jr. in New York on February 20th, 1946, John had been active in the music industry since 1967.
He was best known for hits such as Centrefold and Freeze Frame, with the band enjoying huge success in the 1980s.
Formed as a trio in the 1960s Geils was joined by Danny Klein and Magic Dick before switching from acoustic music to electric guitars. Additional members joined the band in the form of Stephen Jo Bladd and vocalist Peter Wolf and became the J. Geils Band. Seth Justman later joined as a keyboard player.
Wolf left the band around 1983 with vocal duties being taken over by Justman but the group disbanded in 1985.
There have been numerous reunions over the years but they never recaptured the success of the early 80s, although they enjoyed many tours.
Until the death of Geils, the band were still together including Wolf, Klein, Justman and Dick.
It is unclear if they will continue without John.
