Thailand is in mourning today, following the death of twenty-five-year-old Piggy Bank.
The sea turtle consumed coins people threw in her pool believing it would bring them good luck, which ultimately resulted in the poor creatures death.
Chulalongkorn University, who had been taking care of Piggy Bank, said she passed away just after 10am on the morning of March 21, 2017.
Ormsin as she was known in Thai, lived her life in a pool in Chonburi. The turtle had over 900 coins removed from her stomach earlier this month, after developing a strange addiction of swallowing the coins, fed to her by the public.
As a result of a second operation, Piggy lapsed into a coma and died.
Director of the Veterinary Medical Aquatic Animal Research Centre, Dr. Nantarika Chansue, hoped that lessons would be learned from Piggy Bank’s death. People should not feed foreign objects to animals.
Many creatures see shiny objects and consume them, believing it to be food. Animals around the globe die unnecessarily due to man’s foolishness.
Let’s hope Piggy Bank’s passing is not in vain.
