The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources have taken steps to save coral reefs around islands near Phuket.
1600 coral heads were placed in artificial reefs during work lasted for three days.
Natural reefs are underwater ecosystems, held in place by calcium carbonate, a product of the corals. Colonies of tiny creatures build the reefs, which are stunning and play home to many of the world’s rare fish and marine creatures.
Warmer waters caused by global warming and of course damage from humans are causing concern amongst marine biologists, who are fighting an uphill battle to save the corals.
So these artificial reefs will go a long way to aided the preservation of marine life.
