Thousands sat in silence at Sanam Luang when the time came late last night (October 26) for the Royal Cremation of His late Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
The silence was only broken when the large crowd of mourners gathered to pay their final respects at the Saman Lunag ceremonial grounds broke down in tears when the much loved king left for heaven.
His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn presided over the cremation ceremony which was slated to begin at 10pm.
It was almost 11pm when mourners witnessed smoke rising above the crematorium signalling their beloved late monarch was on his way to heaven and the crowd burst into tears with many bowing before their revered king one last time.
Thongbai Sincharoen, 51, was at the ceremonial ground and said it was a heart-breaking moment when she realised the body of the late king was being cremated.
Large numbers of the crowd left after the cremation ceremony concluded but most said they intended to return on Friday to witness the Royal Procession of the collection of the Royal Ashes.
