A top traditional medicine practitioner has called for Kratom leaves to be decriminalized stating that the health benefits far outweighs the negative effects
And that the leaves could even be used to make energy drinks.
Dr Supaporn Pitiporn a doctor at Chaopraya Abhaiphubejhr Hospital made the recommendation to declassify the drug in an article she posted online on Tuesday.
The article come a week after the Narcotics Control Board announced they were currently looking into how many kratom trees families should be allowed to grow.
The study is a result of a recommendation that the Public Health Ministry made stating that Thai’s should be allowed to grow kratom for personal consumption. Kratom has apparently been used for a variety of reasons since ancient times.
Literature speaks of soldiers chewing kratom to increase energy levels before battles. Dr Supaporn stated that people in the southern provinces take kratom to enable them to work for longer periods of time.
Records date back to 1957 stating kratom was used to cure a number of medical conditions including diarrhoea, headaches, fevers and muscle pains.
Dr Supaporn believes it’s time to start using the herb for medicinal purposes as it has been part of Thai culture for centuries.
