The Department of Land Transport have approved the use of 450 electric tuk tuks in Chiang Mai.
The three wheeled electric passenger vehicles will arrive over the course of the next 12 months.
The move will see an improvement in the current taxi vehicles and will no doubt appease many who support “greener” modes of transport.
Many of Thailand’s tuk tuks are still using the air polluting two-stroke petrol engines, which are great for tourist attraction but not so good for the air quality. However it would be wise to ensure a few of the originals survive just as “tourist attractions”
Many also use LPG engines now, which is better than the two-stroke variety as far as reducing pollution goes.
The silent and emissions-free electric models could soon become a common sight in Thailand.
Will Pattaya ever adopt them?
