Following drone footage that captured a large crocodile swimming off of Bang Tao Beach last Thursdays (August 24) officials from the Fisheries Department dispatched a team of experts to track down the large croc.
The team reported they believed they had sighted the croc in a lagoon that leads into the sea near the area where the croc was seen at about 4am on Thursday morning.
The croc wranglers had blocked the mouth of the lagoon with a 300-metre long fishing net in an attempt to stop the large croc from fleeing the lagoon.
Using a searchlight they spotted the crocodile via the light reflecting off of its eyes however the crafty croc was able to evade them as the water he’s in stretches for about 70 rai and is 20 metres deep in parts.
The Phuket Fisheries Chief Paiboon Bunlippatanon said that the large reptile would likely stay near large fresh water food sources.
He also pointed out that there used to be two crocodile farms in Thalang but both were closed in 2016 and their crocodiles all sold.
Paiboon said that officers would be on hand to keep a close eye on nearby beaches and large sources of open water and his team would be on standby to capture the crocodile the next time it is spotted.
