Rice farmers are being asked to grow maize after they harvest their latest production of rice.
The plan is for lowland rice growers to plant maize, whilst the highland farmers prepare their land for corn cultivation.
Apparently there is a shortfall in maize production, which is used for feeding farm animals. The country needs to produce another eight million tonnes of maize to meet demand for both domestic and animal consumption.
President of the Animal Feed Manufacturers Association, Pornsilp Patcharinrattanakul, said the demand for maize had increased by 5.4% from the same period last year, meaning the nation requires almost 20 million tonnes from farmers.
Because of this deficit, we are encouraging agriculturists to move into maize growth for a while.
