Flooding in the Northeast cuts rice production by up to 500,000 tonnes

According to Thai Rice Exporters more than one million rai of farmland used to grow rice in the Northeast of the kingdom has been affected by this year’s flooding which will reduce the rice yield.

The 2017-2018 crop by 5-6 percent which equates to 400,000 to 500,000 tonnes of rice.

A meeting was held yesterday (November 2) where the president of the Thai Rice Export Association stated that over one million rai of rice fields have been damaged.

The meeting was held with agricultural and commerce officials and millers from 20 northern provinces to discuss rice production and set a price for the product after the recent flooding.

Many north-eastern provinces were badly affected by flooding over the last couple of months and hit again when tropical storm “Sonca” arrived in Thailand.
