Thailand’s foreign minister Don Pramudwinai announced today that fugitive former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is in London and has been since September of last year.
The foreign minister said that he was given this information by the British Foreign Secretary and went on to further state that the former PM might be in possession of a passport issued by another country as all of her Thai passports have since been revoked.
It was stated in the announcement however that Yingluck’s current status in the UK is at this time unknown as is whether or not she has applied for political asylum.
The foreign minister was questioned following the announcement as to whether or not officials would attempt to extradite Yingluck from the UK to which he replied “the matter will be looked at from every angle.”
Earlier this week an unconfirmed photo was being widely shared on Thai social media which appeared to show the former Prime Minister in the UK capital at the Westfield Shopping Centre on December 26.
Commenting on the photo National Police Chief Pol Gen Srivara Ransibrahamerlier said that the photo was probably genuine.
The former Prime Minister fled the kingdom before the verdict of her trial in connection to a rice pledging scheme while in office and in her absence was sentenced to five years in prison.
