Supachai Panitchpakdi, the former World Trade Organisation (WTO) chief said he is disturbed by the way many countries prefer to spend money on weapons than on other areas.
The arms race is getting out of hand as far as Mr. Panitchpakdi is concerned and believes action has to be taken to turn the trend around.
Whilst he mentioned Thailand as one of the nations spending too much money on arms, he also said the richer countries were as much to blame.
The former chief offered his support for nations who were investing in roads and infrastructure rather than military hardware. These nations included neighbours Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam.
Thailand of course have recently been in the news ordering tanks and submarines when the money could be invested on healthcare, education, infrastructure and jobs.
