Five people lost their lives yesterday afternoon when a minivan crashed into the back of a truck turning into a quarry in Ayutthaya’s Bangpain district.

It was reported that the minivan was carrying Japanese tourists as well as a Thai guide at the time of the accident and upon hitting the truck crumpled and burst into flames.

The van was apparently traveling from Bangkok to the old city of Ayutthaya. It was reported that two men and three women lost their lives in the accident.

The driver identified as Wirachai Reuangsri survived the accident and is said to be in a serious condition in hospital.

Police plan to interview the driver once doctors say it is ok to do so as well as interview the driver of the truck and other witnesses to find out what caused the accident.

The names of those who lost their lives in the accident were said to be according to JS 100 Traffic Radio, Kumiko Komeima, 59, Yoshio Komeima, 68, Katsuhiko Narimoto, 65 and Haruka Narimoto and their Thai tour guide Piyathip Kruengtai, 35.
