Justice has finally been done as a man is freed after a wrongful conviction for murder.
Worawit Sinthongnoi, who was held for five years for a murder he did not commit, then for alleged drug dealing, has walked out the gates of Ubon Ratchathani Central Prison, after being proven innocent.
Worawit and four other defendants had been accused of murder in 2010, following a fight, which resulted in a man being shot.
Five people were taken to court over the incident and sentenced to life in imprisonment, which was later reduced to 13 years as it was not premeditated.
Their parents did not give up their cause, believing they were innocent.
Ballistic and gunpowder tests conducted by King Mongkut’s University of Technology, revealed results that contradicted witness statements. The accused also passed lie-detector tests.
New evidence was submitted to the Supreme Court, which saw four of the five of the murder charge, with the exception of Worawit, who was detained on drug charges. The authorities claimed he was arranging drug deals in prison using a mobile phone. Apparently six men were held with the name “Worawit” and it was a case of mistaken identity.
Now, after five long years of protesting his innocence, the man has been released and is free to join his family.
