Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha opened the new BTS Samrong station on Monday. Samrong is one of nine new stations on the BTS system, and is part of the Sukhumvit Line extension.
The Prime Minister’s attempt at driving the train was not a huge success as the train jolted forward, resulting in passengers losing their balance. He proceeded to hand over the controls to a trained operator, who took the train to BTS Bearing.
The thirteen kilometre extension encompasses Pu Chao, Chang Erawan, Royal Thai Naval Academy, Pak Nam, Srinagarindra, Phraek Sa, Sai Luat before terminating at Kheha Samut Prakan.
The impressive air conditioned trains carry almost 600,000 people per day and has a top speed of 80 km/h (50mph).
It was announced that journeys will be free till the end of April.
