Its official Thai women on average are now the second fattest group of people in all of Asia, second only to women from Malaysia.
Wannee Nitthiyanan, the head of Thailand’s Diabetes Association made the statement when speaking with the media where she painted a fairly unattractive picture of people becoming increasingly overweight.
She claimed the surge in obesity is down to poor diet and lack of exercise resulting in an alarming rise in diabetes, heart conditions and blocked arteries.
According to figures 8,000 people were now dying each year from diabetes in Thailand.
Looking further at the data from 2009 to 2014 the number of people with diabetes jumped from 3.3 million to 4.8 million.
She said however one of the main concerns is that there is an estimated 2 million people in Thailand who are unaware that they even have the condition.
Wannee stated that people were more overweight in towns and cities and referred to the rise in waistlines as an obesity explosion.
She noted that the obesity problem was especially worrisome amongst Thailand’s female population where Thai ladies have now on average become the second fattest group of people in Asia.
They are also second in the list for people dying from conditions including diabetes and heart disease.
With Thailand becoming a more developed country with more and more infrastructure bringing many fast food chains to the kingdom is it any wonder that waistlines are getting a little bigger?
