It has been reported that international flights could be landing in Hau Hin before the end of the year.
Air Asia has submitted a proposal to the airports authority (AO) to conduct daily flights between Hua Hin and Kuala Lumpur.
If the proposal is accepted it will be a major boost to tourism in Hau Hin as the airport is only several kilometres away from the seaside resort.
Darun Saengchai an official at the AO said that Air Asia have requested they have landing fees and rental charges for facilities at the airport waved initially to get the route up and running.
If terms are agreed the first international flights into Hau Hin could happen before the end of the year.
The airport has had all building work finished and is ready for use by commercial flights capable of handling up to 300 passengers per hour.
While the details are still being ironed out if the airport were to go international they would need to address the issue of immigration and customs facilities.
Flights from Kuala Lumpur could open up the resort for more tourists from Malaysia as well as providing another stepping off point for tourists who wish to travel south.
