Lay Pang Phuket’s celebrity crocodile which was identified as being an “alien species” after being caught several months ago after drone footage showed it swimming off of the coast was transferred to its new home at the Phuket Zoo yesterday (December 19.)
A ceremony was held at the Coastal Aquaculture Research and Development Centre where the manager of the Phuket Zoo, Pichai Sakulsorn put pen to paper to sign an agreement to take care of the large reptile for the next three years.
Pichai said the zoo would educate students and visitors about hybrid crocodile using Lay Pang as an example.
Lay Pang was then moved from its concrete enclosure at the centre to a new 20-meter enclosure at the zoo.
The decision was made that Lay Pang could not be released back into the wild as it is a cross breed between a salt and fresh water crocodile a combination which could not have naturally happened in the wild.
