Lifeguards have closed beaches along Phuket’s west coast due to safety reasons in an attempt to prevent tourists and locals from swimming in dangerous waters.
The President of the Phuket Lifeguard Service Prathaiyut Chuayuan spoke with reports saying that they had roped off large sections of beaches at Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Bang Tao, Patong, Kata and several more.
He issued a stern warning telling the public “do not go into the sea” stating that the waves at the effected beaches are dangerous today.
He said lifeguards will be posted at all beaches in an effort to make sure no one goes into the water saying they will ban people if necessary.
The dangerous surf is a result of storms in the region where scattered thunderstorms and isolated heavy rains are expected to continue until September 22.
The Thai Meteorological Department said that waves might reach heights of 2-metres as a result of 20-35km/h south-westerly winds.
