Customs officials at Suvarnabhumi International Airport arrested an Australian man yesterday after he allegedly attempted to smuggle 26 iPhone 8 mobile phones into the country without permission.
The man was named as Ho Wun Howard Lee, 38, who said that he purchased the phones in Australia and was intending to sell them to his friends in Singapore where he was on route to, transferring in Bangkok.
He said that he was unaware that he had to tell customs agents that he was transporting the large amount of mobiles.
The Australian man was apparently about to walk through the “nothing to declare” line of the arrivals lounge with his two suitcases of phones when officials noticed him acting strangely and asked to check his luggage.
They X-rayed the man’s cases which led to them find the 26 phones.
Customs officials said that the iPhone 8 had yet to be given authorization to be sold or used in Thailand thus making it illegal to possess the devices.
Customs officials detained Ho under customs and telecommunication laws.
