Tuesday a local dog lover in the southern province of Songkhla reportedly discovered four migrant construction workers using parts from an old fan to grill a stray dog she had been feeding for over two years near Wat Pradittharam.
Nalin Khantisuwan, 60, said she witnessed the men cooking the two year old Thai Ridgeback having strangled it with a rope, skinned and gutted it before grilling the poor animal.
She said that on Tuesday she was going to feed the strays near the temple when a Myanmar woman called Yisi came to tell her that four other migrant workers had just killed a dog and planned on eating it.
Nalin said she followed a trail of blood to their site where they were in the process of skinning the unfortunate canine.
The elderly dog lover said she pleaded with the men in tears to stop but she said they continued believing that they couldn’t understand what she was saying.
She then left and called a local dog rescue association who arrived shortly after 5pm and found the men eating the stray dog.
The rescue association spoke with the manager of the workers and told him to warn his employees to leave the dogs alone or they would call the authorities.
Rescue workers found by the workers makeshift BBQ the rope they used to kill the dog, fresh animal blood and banana leaves they used to serve the meat in.
Officers in the area said on Thursday no charge had been issued to the workers but said their actions could constitute animal cruelty which could be punishable with a jail sentence of up to two years in prison and a fine of 40,000 baht.
