Today Thailand’s Treasury Department will roll out a new range of coins, portraying the image of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.
The people of the nation will see the coins, which cover a range of values including 10, 5, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 baht versions. Finance Minister Apisak Tantivorawong confirmed the introduction of the new currency but insisted that all existing coins would still be legal tender.
The king is on one side of the coin, which will have local people scrambling to collect the new items as soon as they can.
Apisak suggested that there would be a gradual decline in notes and coin usage as more people switch to electronic banking.
Cards, internet and phone payments could see the country save a whopping 10 billion baht per annum on cost of production, money that could be used elsewhere.
