Banknotes here in Thailand will look a little different after April 6 as new notes with the portrait of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn will go into circulation to coincide with Chakri Day.
The announcement was made by the Bank of Thailand today who said that they have been granted permission from the Royal Palace to release bank notes in the denominations of 20, 50 and 100 baht bearing the image of King Rama X.
They said 500 baht and 1000 baht notes with His Majesty’s portrait would be released later in the year on July 28 to coincide with the king’s birthday.
There are currently no plans to recall older bank notes and they will remain legal tender.
