Two Thai universities have developed an app, which promises to put an end to overpricing by Bangkok taxi drivers.
The app known as “Taxi OK” will also protect drivers from being robbed it is claimed
The app is GPS enabled has been proposed to be used in every cab, along with an emergency button fitted to all 93,000 taxis in the city.
King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang unveiled the phone app at a press conference on Wednesday.
The app is a joint venture with Burapha University’s Faculty of Logistics.
The idea behind the app is to provide greater passenger and driver safety during journeys.
The whole process involves seven components, including photographs of customers, location and destination recording, booking taxis, monitoring of drivers and lodging of complaints.
Supervisors would be able to view the movements of every taxi. They can observe the speed of the vehicle, location, engine performance, driver identification and the fare displayed on the meter.
The biggest issue will be convincing drivers to accept the technology as many run without meters, agreeing fares with passengers before they get in the car.
And of course many passenger prefer to know the fare before departing on their journey.
