The Sai River was unable to cope with days of heavy rain and resulted in floods on either side of the Thai-Myanmar border late of Thursday night
Markets in both Tachileik and Mae Sai were inundated with water as stall owners quickly rushed to move their wares out of harm’s way.
The governor of Narongsak Osotthanakorn instructed district chief Chutidej Meechan to alert Disaster Prevention and mitigation officials after many homes were also pummelled by the floodwaters.
The waters in the centre of the market were reported to be 30 centimetres deep.
Troops stationed in Pha Mueang have been drafted in to help local residents.
