Officials say visa exemptions helped to boost tourism revenue

A spokesman speaking on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has stated that Visa exemptions for nationals from 21 select countries helped to boost tourism revenue by 47.553 Billion baht during a six-month period in 2017.

Elaborating further Nattaporn Jatusripitak said that the visa exemptions for the 21 countries from March 1 to August 31 last year resulted in the government losing 7.19 billion baht in income from visa insurance, however an addition 47.553 billion baht was generated from tourism revenue during the same period.

The figures were presented in a report to the Cabinet yesterday by the Tourism and Sports Ministry.

During the six-month period 6.06 million tourists were given visa exemptions resulting in an increase of 4.46 percent of people visiting the kingdom compared to the same period in 2016.
